Problem Playing Music with Vista Home Premium

Question

I have been using an XPS/Dimension 210/9200C as a media computer with no problems until I upgraded to Vista. When I try to play music either through Media Player or Media Centre the first track doesn't start for about 20 seconds after pressing play, then about 20 seconds before the end of the track the music "stutters" as if the computer is having trouble reading the disk fast enough. I think its a disk access problem rather than a media player problem. Has anyone come across this or has any ideas how it can be fixed,

I've experienced a similar problem with Vista Home Premium. Movies and music are always slow to start after selecting in Windows Explorer. Media Player plays some cryptic message while loading (I'm at work now, on W2K, so I can't remember the message.) Music stutters during the last seconds of each track when playing as part of a playlist in Media Player. The problem doesn't seem to occur when playing songs only one at a time. I've 'decided' that the stuttering is caused by either the integrated sound card, drivers, or Media Player. The first two I can experiment with, the last option is out of my control. Any suggestions out there? Dimension E520 Intel 6400 Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM X1300 256 MB Graphics card

I pulled this off another thread and tried it.  It appears to work.   1) Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Speakers/Headphones >Enhancements 2) Check the box for disable all enhancements.

I have the same problems with Media Player 11. When I click on a track Media Player comes up and then about 15 seconds later the track plays. I have installed the latest sound driver available for my system but I sometimes get the music stuttering a little or slightly crackling. I have SigmaTel High Defintion Audio Codec sound card. Any one have any solution to this ?

Thanks for the post. This one didn't work for me just made the crackling worse I don't see how because its taking the bass etc off. Thanks anyway hope this works for you lot out there who had the same problem

Done a little more investigating. Jumping from track to track is also slow, again about 20 seconds from pressing the next track button to the music starting. I also tried playing a CD and there was no problem at all, the music started straight away no stuttering and no problem moving from track to track. When I copied the CD to the hard disk and played the copy the problems returned. It must be something to do with how information is accessed on the hard disk.

Problem solved! Forget what I said about the disk access. I tried what usboismithr said and checked the box to disable all enhancements, even though none of the enhancements were enabled. After doing that everything worked.   Many thanks for your help.

Hello Bill, I am having the same problems that others mention in this thread.  Very annoying.  Can you tell me if this updated Driver or BIOS that you mention has been released yet?  Thank You. -------------------------------------------------------------  Thanks, all for posting. Unchecking enhancements is a workaround. We have escalated the issue for follow up with our product engineers. Some users are reporting in the hardware audio boards that disabling enhancements just makes the issue more tolerable without completely resolving the issue. Is this what you have found, or does it seem to completely correct the issue? I think the final fix will be an updated driver or BIOS, but am unable to speculate as to which. I would suggest sticking with the workaround until updated drivers are posted on support.dell.com. Just try checking the hardware and Vista boards for update news, or watch for new drivers/BIOS being posted and try them out. Thanks for your patience.
