Problem with Windows Mail

When I close the Windows Mail program, it prompts me with:

“Windows Mail can compact the message store.  This may take up to a few minutes. OK or Cancel”

When I click OK, then:

“Compacting the Windows Mail database” message appears, but a few seconds later when the progress bar is about 50% done, the following message appears:

“Windows Mail has stopped working.”

And then:

“Check online for a solution and restart the program” or “Restart the program.”

Clicking on Problem Details reveals the following explanations:

I'm having a similar problem with Windows Movie Maker, that came pre-installed with my new Dell Inspiron E1705.  Two gigs of memory and 256mb on video card.
In addition to Movie Maker not working, my Pinnacle Studio 10 does not work very well either.
