Bbryant,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
I have found that clearing the I.E settings usually helps this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
How to reset I.E defaults:
1.Right click on the Internet Explorer icon.
2.Click on Properties.
3.Under the "General" tab, Temporary Internet Files Option, click the Delete Files button, and then click OK.
Under the History option, click the Clear History button.
**This will delete all web pages you have been to previously***
4.Under the "Security" tab, if applicable, click the Default Level button.
5.Under the "Programs" tab, click the Reset Web settingsbutton.
6.Click the "Advanced" tab, click the Restore Defaults button.
7.Click the Apply or OK buttons.
8.Restart the system.

Clear out the Temporary folders:
1.Open My Computer, and the Windows folder.
2.Open the Temp folder under the Windows folder.
3.Delete everything that is listed in the Temp folder.
4.Go back to the Windows Folder.
5.Open the Temporary Internet Files folder.
6.Delete everything that is listed in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
7.Close all open Windows and reboot the system.

Delete installed I.E objects.
1.Right click on the Internet Explorer icon.
2.Click on Properties.
3.Under the "General" tab click the Settings button.
4.Click the View Objects button.
5.Click Edit, Select All, click File, Delete.
6.Close everything and reboot the system.

I also had problems installing flash player v6. I can think of three reasons why you are having problems. Having spent sometime trying to install it myself these are the areas worth checking:

1) Is animations turned off in Internet Explorer? Tools->Internet options->Advanced tab-> scroll down to multimedia heading. Ensure "Play animations in web pages" is checked

2) There is a known issue with XP protected files treating flash as a Windows file and stopping it from being over written. Fixed in SP1 I believe. See this URL for details:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/xp_player_installerror.htm

Make sure you have applied Serive Pack1 to XP then follow the following manual delete instructions to remove both swflash and flash. See this URL for details on how to manually remove both version 5 and version 6:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/control_remove.htm

Once swflash & flash are gone you should have clean system and be able to install Flash OK.

3) If 1 & 2 don't fix your problem something is blocking flash!

In my case this turned out to be my pop-up blocker: Free Surfer Mk II. This is a good pop-up blocker, but it was also configured to block flash: tools -> options ensure "enable flash animations" is enabled. I would check any pop-up or advert blocker you have for a similiar setting.

Firewalls also may have an option to block flash. I use Symantec's Norton personal firewall and after the pain caused by Free Surfer I quickly checked for flash blocking and sure enough it also had this option turned on.

I had a similar problem which required that I uninstall Shockwave before upgrading the flash player.  http://download.shockwave.com/pub/shockwave/uninstaller/swuninstaller.exe  If you don't have Shockwave, try using the Macromedia flash uninstaller:  http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flash/ts/uninstall_flash_player.exe  Also, have you tried the flashplayer help page?  http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/playerfaq.htm#fixall

Good luck.

Had not thought of having to uninstall Shockwave before so i uninstalled it.  Same results.  Without Shockwave and with all traces of Flash viewer manually removed the download will not work.  I don't even get an error message.  When I first click on install now, the progress bar sweeps full scale as if something was transferred (I'm connected via cable modem at 100MBPS) then nothing, not trust content screen, no error screen...nothing.  But something is being transferred because every not and then after several attempts to install, i go find files and get another flash.ocx and flash.inf file in the system 32 folder.  Looks like this thing has hit the wall and the onlyn way to oversome it is to start clean with a full format and reinstall XP.  Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Bbryant,

One more shot.
We use this info on the Works Suite forum, because Macromedia causes some
problems with Works Suite.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1.Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\flash.ocx" /u, and then click OK.

2.Redo the whole scenario again by going...
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\swflash.ocx", and then click OK

What you are simply attempting or accomplishing to do here by performing all this Run commands is to reinstall the default macromedia flash player which is version 5 that came with Microsoft Picture It
You will not be able to view other sites though that requires macromedia player version 6 or later and if so it will automatically ask you to update.
You you will fall on that same problem again if you do but so what life goes on until macromedia and microsoft irons out the problem.
You will know by performing all these procedures on how easy it is to reinstall it again.
If you really want to view sites that requires later versions of macromedia then by all means do so...
You will just have to reinstall the older version anyway so you will be able to use " Get Creative Ideas"...

Instructions provided by the Graduate, Dell Forum User.

Max frustrations have arrived.  I have absolutely tried everything but format and reinstall everything.  Nothing works to correct or reinstall flash in IE or XP.  I even have copy of Flash 6 install software on my hard drive...cannot install the stand alone version or the IE version.  I give up! Thank all of you for your efforts but it appears that the only thing to do now is to wipe the slate clean and start over.

If I might add, I don't like Macromedia Flash 6 because when I install it, the intro movie and the helpful movies in picture it!
won't play. I see a flicker, and then nothing. I have flash player 8 installed and it causes no problems. With Flash player 6, all my stored Shockwave flash files still play, but not picture it!
I tried uninstalling and re-installing Picture it!, that don't work. It doesn't work with SP-1 after installation unless I delete all the shockwave and macromedia files prior to installing Picture it! So what can I do? Either do without Macromedia 6 or do without the flash movie intro and help in picture it!

Did you ever sort out your flash problem? If not it may be worth asking the question on the Macromedia forum. See this URL: http://www.macromedia.com/support/forums/

Thanks for asking but No, I never got the flash problem resolved.  I gave up and am currently doing without until I get aggrivated enough to reformat the drive and reload everything.  I'll check out the macromedia site anyway. Thanks again.

I too couldn't install Flash if my life depended on it.  In an IE discussion group post from a year ago I saw advice to clear the temp files cache & offline content.  Sure enough, that fixed it & it installed like a charm.

What the h&*! is goin' on bet. Flash & IE?  Don't those 2 want to make nice & play well w. others?
