Problems with defrag and safe mode

Using a Dell Inspiron 1150, windows xp pro, not a new installation, had mother board replaced by Dell under warranty about 2 months ago. I use this laptop every day. Did not have a problem with defrag when laptop came back from service.

I launch defrag and get this exact message:

Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: John's Notebook C Please run Chkdsk /f

I go to the DOS like screen in Win XP Pro, and type Chkdsk /f at the C:\ prompt.

I get this exact message:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts (Y/N)

I disable Norton Internet and Norton Anti-virus and Spyware Doctor. I try Chkdsk again. No luck.

I type Y for Yes and restart. Nothing changes, same messages appear.

I go to Safe Mode to try to run defrag from there.

A page appears (black background, white letters), listing drivers in win sys, but then hangs. After ten minutes with no progress, I press the power button to shut the computer down.
I ran full system scan for spyware and viruses.

Two days ago I downloaded a Music Manager from www.emusic.com. I have not deleted it, hoping that someone here can assist.

Thanks, john

I can't defrag or get into Safe Mode. Can you Help?

John

OK, I will answer my own question.
After e-mailing the much trashed Dell support, they sent me directions which I followed and solved the problem.
This board doesn't get much results compared to the hardware board.

If you need to know the fix, post your question here.

I cannot defrag my laptop.  I am accessing defrag from My Computer>Properties>Tools>Defrag.  It analyses, tells me I need to defrag & goes to 3% before it loses connection & tellsme to restart defrag.  I have done CHKDSK (NTFS file system), disabled my Symantec Anti-Virus & my desktop Weather Channel before attempting defrag.  The analysis states that I have 56% free space.

I am very frustrated....Please, help me!

Thank you for sharing, Jocase!

I contacted Dell & they are sending a back-up disk on a one-time-only basis.  I'll Google the info. as you suggest.  Once again, I appreciate your assistance.  Wish me luck....this is my first laptop and my PC is having a PCI problem, so I'm relying totally on this laptop right now until I fix the ethernet card problem on the PC.

On another subject, Is it possible to add another USB port to this laptop?  I have two on mine....I use one for the power cord and the other for my printer.  I would like to attach a Majic Jack for low-cost phone service to one of the ports, but will have to switch off with my printer as it is now.

Slainte!
