Problems with I8600 and Windows 2000
Hi!
I am having quite some problems with speedstep on my laptop.
It seems to be running 1400MHz (std) all the time.... If im on AC and unplug it i read the CPU speed as 600MHz (using I8k fan gui) but after a short amount of time it switches back to the 1400 MHz....
I have tried installing the "Dell Notebook System Software Utility".... But i comes up with this:

Is it true that i can not run windows 2000 on my I8600?

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.
The Inspiron 8600 is shipped only with versions of Windows XP, we have not tested this system under Windows 2000. While the system itself would most likely run fine with Windows 2000 (assuming you can find Windows 2000 drivers for everything), utilities for the system may not work well with Windows 2000.

In order to install those utilities you need to extract the files out of the CAB files using tools such as i6comp (that might be misspelled)
The regular file viewers will not find any files in there, these CABs are InstallShield proprietary ones

I have bought 3 Inspiron 8500s over the past 4 months and have managed to install Windows Advanced Server on them with no bother. Wanting to keep the company using the same kit I tried to buy another last week, but they have been replaced by the 8600. I duely bought one, spec'ed as Mobile Pentium® M Processor, 1.7GHz, 15.4 WSXGA+ Display, Internal NIC/Modem/Sound which has a 128MB ATI M10 Video Memory Card. There does not seem to be a Dell and MS approved Win2K driver for the Radeon 9600. I have searched the download site and not found one. I have tried forcing the XP version to install but the machine then becomes unusable. (I have become stuck in the Windows Login Loop problem, and services will not start and the control panel will not display...etc etc..). I have tried everything to get this machine to install Win2K and failed.
Our company needs to use Windows Advanced Server because we develop MSAS apps (using calculated cells so we need Ent Ed SQL Server) and as we are often on client sites we need it on our laptops. We have been extremely happy with the Inspiron 8500s we bought. Why has Dell taken a step backwards now with these 8600s that only run XP? I don't know what to do with the new machine, it is useless for our purpose, and I have written to Dell UK to ask them to exchange it for an 8500 if they can.
Has anyone from Dell or otherwise got any suggestions to get this resolved please?
