Rebuilt my computer
Hey guys...I just rebuilt my computer from a a dell Dimension 8200 that i bought back in 2002. I got new parts all except for my cpu and hard drive. I was really excited about this because I got some really awesome new parts; however, When I looked at the Windows XP install disc, it says I can only use it on a dell computer (I assume it means I need the dell motherboard). My smile turned into a frown... So am I stuck with a worthless windows cd now? I would appreciate any replies...thanks....

No, you did not buy a copy of Windows. You purchased a license to use Windows on a computer which you purchased from Dell. An OEM license differs from a retail license in that it is valid only for the computer with which it is purchased. A retail license can be transferred between computers after the user proves to Microsoft that it will be used on only one computer.

Another question though...
When I bought my computer off of dell, did I buy a copy of Windows or not? Shouldnt I be able to install a Windows XP that I bought on a new motherboard as long as I dont change the cpu, since windows is registered per cpu?
