Reformatting
I currently have a windows xp home edition and a dimension 8250 and Sp2 installed on it. I want to reformat my computer because there is a bad virus on it. I followed the directions for reformatting by inserting the cd in and restarting the computer. I pressed the F12 key and tried to boot from the cd but it wouldnt and it keeps on saying strike F1 to retry boot or F2 for setup menu. Someone please help me and give me directions on how to reinstall. Oh yeah and also the Cd im using is the old dell one with home edition sp1. Does that affect my reformatting?

Go into the system setup (F2 when the computer boots up) and locate the section that talks about boot order. Set it so that your CD drive is first (or at least before the hard drive). Then save and exit. The computer should then begin the boot process. Since the XP CD is bootable, text should come up with something about pressing a key to boot from the XP CD. After that, the setup is pretty much walk through (delete the existing partition and then Format it as NTFS).
One thing you might want to do: Download SP2 and burn it to a CD. That way, once XP is installed, you can install SP2 before anything else. Then you can go on and install the drivers (Chipset, then video, then everything else). Finally, after driver installation, make sure you download all critical updates for XP (you may have to run windows update several times to get all the updates).
