Registry Editor on start up

Question

On booting up my system today I got the welcome screen and then a full screen window titled 'REGISTRY EDITOR'. Then the computer hangs and I have nothing. When I close that window I am left with a blank screen with just the wallpaper, no programme icons or anything.   I have tried booting from safe mode with the same results.   Can anyone help please?   I am running Windows XP on a Dimension 2400

have you tried scanning your system for viruses?....its definitely a software issue..try running chkdsk /r in recovery console..or boot into safe mode with command prompt and try do a manual system restore, type this in the command prompt, c:\ windows\system32\restore\restrui.exe..
