Registry repair

Question

I was reading an article about how problems and errors in windows registry can slow down your computer considerably. So I downloaded some free trial version software from several companies. The results varied rather drastically. The errors found ranged from about 200 to over 2,000. The trial versions of course don't fix the problems, but even if they did, I wouldn't have a clue as to what to delete and what to leave alone. First of all, is cleaning up the registry necessary, and if so, is there any software for novices like me?

Registry cleaning is never necessary.  Sometimes, but not often the registry must be edited for specific reasons.  The reason different cleaners give different counts is because each software publisher defines errors in a different way.  The article you read is basically wrong.  To better understand the issue of registry cleaning, search the 'Sysinternals' web site www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx .  They, 'Sysinternals', was a private company, now owned by Microsoft and are privy to Microsoft internal documentation.
