reinstall problems on inspiron 1100

i hope i didn't mess up too bad.....please help!
 
reinstalling xp home sp1; deleted all partitions, xp using entire hard drive;...install went ok, except for display, which was centered on screen, about half size;  found display adapter driver, full screen ok!
installed sp2 from disk, went ok.
installed several other drivers in no particular order, then found out order MUST be: notebook system software first, then chipset;  then random order ok.
can what i did be corrected?
network adapter working properly (according to device mgr), but cannot connect to internet.  I would like to connect to dell support site, so notebook will be configured properly using sevice tag. (currently getting drivers/downloads from another pc, so cable modem is ok).
 
in addition, memory was upgraded from 256MB to 1GB prior to reinstall; does BIOS need to be updated?  (old memory no longer available)
 
sorry for the lengthy post; probably forgot something anyway;  if any other info needed, let me know.

If you did not install the device drivers in the posted order then yes, you will have to re-install the OS and then re-install the device drivers in their proper sequence...

thanks for your quick reply.
 
will reinstall, not a problem (just time consuming!)
 
just a few questions, please:
 
1) does the additional memory matter at this point (re: BIOS) ?
2) install service pack 2 before or after device drivers ?
3) will windows recognize cable modem, or must drivers be manually installed ?
 
if you can think of any other steps needed to get up & running, your advice will be greatly appreciated!

Make sure the LAN connection Properties for TCP/IP internet protocol are set to acquire the IP and DNS addresses automatically. Then power cycle your network:
 
Network Power cycle steps:

1) Power everything off. (cable/DSL modem, router, computers, etc.)
2) Wait 5 minutes...
3) Power on cable/DSL modem, wait 1-2 minutes...
4) Power on router, wait an additional 1-2 minutes...
5) Power on remaining computers or components.
6) Check for network and Internet connection.

o.k. _____reinstalled OS, installed drivers (in correct order), installed SP2; so far everything working fine & speedy, EXCEPT: still cannot connect to internet:mansad:
 
only one exclamation point in Device Manager: PCI Modem ( i don't use dial-up anyway).
Network Adapter is listed & enabled; using CAT5 wire directly to cable modem; ethernet connection at laptop is amber, instead of green; taskbar icon shows a "red X" on Network Connection.
 
went to BROADCOM site (network adapter) downloaded current driver, trans to laptop, installed to system files, & updated driver in Device Manager; still no connection:mansad:
 
what am i missing, or doing wrong?

also,disabled unknown pci modem & configured network adapter link speed to 100mbps; got activity signal on modem, but still get network cable unplugged message.
 
it's driving me crazy:smileymad:

What is the exact brandname and model # of your network adapter?

Okay, are you sure the Windows XP (32bit) driver is the one you installed from the Broadcom website? I guess you should try and update the BIOS, as well?
 
Also, to help troubleshoot this further? On 1100,Click Start > Run > type cmd in address bar > Click OK > type ipconfig/all at blinking cursor > hit Enter on keyboard > Copy and Paste results into a forum post reply to this string.
 
This will show how your network adapter is configured...

yes, broadcom driver correct; but i rolled back to dell driver after broadcom didn't work.

i will update BIOS if necessary, but have never done it; can you explain how, please?

will give results of ipconfig/all when i get home later.

Try this:
1) Open a reply post window and enter whatever text you wish up to the point where you wish to enter the results of the ipconfig/all.
2) Open Command Prompt window and do ipconfig/all. When results are displayed...look for little CP icon in upper left hand corner of the CP window.
3) Right click CP icon and scroll to Edit > Select All, right click little CP icon again and scroll to Edit > Copy.
4) Now, go to reply post window and place mouse pointer where you want to paste the ipconfig/all results. Then, right click mouse button and select Paste.
 
The results should now be displayed in the reply post window and you just need to finish and send...
