Reinstall XP...................

A full retail CD (Not An Upgrade) will work with your DELL; just mean you'll have to do the WPA thing after 30 days.  You'll probably want to download ALL of the drivers packages in advance so that you have them handy as you'll need to install them once the O/S is laid down.

 

I'm not sure what type of drive you have, but you may need to create an HDD controller floppy and press F6 during the TextSetup portion of WinXP if your HDD is a SATA, eSATA, etc.  - IDE/EIDE should be fine.

If you are having problems with the new hard drive being recognized, go tino the BIOS and chnage the setting on the drive to "Auto Detect".

OK, I reinstalled XP Media Edition and all the drivers for my system....My problem now is Internet Explorer can not be found, my dsl modem will not connect....... Microsoft wanted 79.00 dollars, again dell want help because do not know the previous owner info............... Would installing XP Media over a system that had XP home cause the registration problems?

 

 

Well, beginning to think maybe my choice of XP is my problem!!! The version I chose the was a OEM version, during the install it ask for the XP Professional service pack 2 disk.. Of course that I do not have, tried to copy the I files setup was looking, from my old recovery disk.. As you can guess that did not work...Should I opt for the full version?? We were trying to save a 100, three young-ans, wife's in school...

At a minimum you would have needed to install the Chip Set, Video, Netwokr, and Audio drivers inthat order.  Did you do that?  Are there any Yellow ! in the Device Manager?

Did you wipe the drive completely for this install?  If these are OEM disc, registration is not necessary.

After all this has been verifeid, please post the results of an ipconfig /all.

The origin of purchase for the tower was E-bay, the LCD was from Dell..When we moved last year some info and other things was lost...So I can not provide Dell with the original owner info, and support told me they would not send one to me... Probably could have had it up and running tonight, if I would have purchased a retail version of XP Home and not an OEM Version.. Live and learn...My thinking was the OEM version would basically work the same minus manuals,support,and a few other things.....

It should. Are you trying to do a clean install?

Yes, did a new install were it formated the 0 drive into a single partition....Everything worked good installed the drivers in the order Dell website listed..It was not until trying to install my dsl software,that I noticed no Internet Explorer or network..Did the run-cmd-ipconfig prompts, it returned nothing...During the install when it asked the KP Professional Update 2 cd, I hit cancel the first install. The second install when it asked,tried to copy the files from my old recovery disk...Did not work...Nothing hardware related seems to be an issue. When the first 80G Seagate went out, replaced it with two new Seagate 80g and new sata cables...

You just think it was working.  With no results form an ipconfig /all, that usually means the NIC card is dead.

 

That whole setup with MCE using multiple discs can get confusing, I will admit that.

Never had problems with the NIC, until I tried to install the PX Media Center.!!! If it is not installing Internet Explorer, what else is it not installing???

Just bought a retail version of XP Home Edition, going to send the XP Media OEM version... Tried to do another install, but it still ask for the Professional Update 2 disk!! It originally came with the home edition so maybe it will work......

Of course it asks for a version of XP Pro, that is what MCE is based upon, not Home.

You keep mentioning this "Update" disc.  What is this, are you meaning an "upgrade" disc?

Why would I buy XP Pro, just to install XP Media that's dumb. After the installation of the second XP Media disk, setup stops, ask for XP Pro SP2 setup disk...If you hit cancel when setup ask, setup does not install everything( I think ) I knew that media version was roughly based on pro, but with the full version it should install without Pro installation disk. Maybe that's Bill's way of making extra spending money. I used Linux about 15 years ago, can always go back to it.. There probably more options and support software for it now..

Just put Disc 1 back in . . it will compete the installation.  It's asking for XP Pro setup disc, because tht is what Disc 1 is.
