Windows XP reaches its End of Life in 6 months. See Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 End of Life April 2014: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/endofsupport.aspx

Upgrading to Windows 7 32 Bit isn't really worth the cost of the license for that model (it has Intel 915GM graphics and Intel never supported this for Windows 7) as it is quite a low end system.

I'm guessing an Inspiron 1300? What model of Dell?

Regarding your XP install, you should install XP Service Pack 3: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Intel Chipset: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

Intel GM915: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=12531&keyword=915GM&lang=eng

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller: http://ftp.dell.com/network/R149798.EXE

Conexant Modem Driver: http://ftp.dell.com/comm/R114200.EXE

Sigmatel Audio: http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER96136M/2/R171789.exe

You might need some other things but I need to know the model.

If the Windows 7 disk has never been used to install Windows 7 on any PC, then you can use it to install and activate Windows 7 on the Inspiron 6000. However, Dell does not have Windows 7 drivers.

If the Windows 7 disk has been used, then no, you will not be able to activate Windows 7 on your laptop after installation.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000.

I do have a Windows 7 disk. Will it work with my Inspiron 6000?

Thank you for the quick response.  I will download drivers and see where I end up.

Question....do not see driver for video controller.  I'm assuming the Intel GM95 is the driver for the Ethernet Controller.

Regards,

Penny

Intel GM915 is graphics.

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller is the ethernet.

You can install Windows 7 32 Bit if it is a retail license not in use (not if its an OEM license that came with another computer). Also the computer needs to have 1 GB of RAM or more installed.

For XP the Inspiron 6000 drivers can be found here:

http://ftp.dell.com/published/Pages/inspiron-6000.html

Windows 7 32 Bit is not supported by Dell (but then again Windows XP 32 Bit will soon not be supported by Microsoft) but will work as I have made an unofficial driver set here:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/unofficial-driver-sets/inspiron-laptops-windows-7/inspiron-6000-windows-7-32-bit/
