reload of operating system

I have a Dimension 5150  with a CD  and  DVD writer etc with 1MB ram and Windows XP home edition.  I do not have the disk drivers to reload the OS.  On Dell site,  there are many thinks listed for this and not sure what I exactly will need.   It is said, that I need the right combination to retain all the drivers for the components  to still work.

I assume I should copy all files I need to retain as they will go away with a reload?

The link below will allow you to order an disc on line, you are right to backup your data, because once you reinstall you will lose all your data,

If you are reinstalling XP then you need to reload your drivers in a particular order. that order is listed HERE.

the most important two are the Desk top system software and the Chipset.

The rest you will find in the remain drivers listing. As you mention there are numerous ones and some catagories like network or video will have multiple listings. To find the particular drivers that are needed for your system go HERE. Enter you service tag number and click on orginal configuration. This will give you a listing of all the hardware that was orginally in your system when it shipped. This list can be somewhat cryptic so if you have any questions just post back and we can help you determine exactly what particular hardware you have in your system

Jtsurge,

Edit your post and remove the Service Tag.  Your post will be deleted otherwise.

If you have not reformatted your hard drive, you should be able to use the Dell PC Restore by Symantec to put your system back to its "as-shipped" condition.

To do this, turn off your computer.  Turn it back on.  While the Dell logo is on the screen, press CTRL and F11 keys simultaneously, then release them simultaneously.  If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  More information on the Dell PC Restore by Symantec is here:

Hope this info helps.

First of all, can you please edit your post to remove the service tag.  While I understand why you posted it, doing so is a violation of the TOS.

Second, I checked in our system and either that is not a valid service tag, or there is a problem with it in our system.  If you can send me a private message with the rest of that barcoded sticker (specifically the Express Service Code number) I can look into it further to find out what the problem is.

In the mean time, you can still get the drivers for your system from support.dell.com by selecting the computer model (Desktop, Dimensin, Dim 5150) instead of entering your service tag.
