reloading xp

Here is my situation:

I have a dell dimension 8200 (i think) with an Intel Pentium 4 processor 1.80 GHz. My 40 Gig hard drive failed recently. I purchased an 80 Gig hard drive and installed it - both were Seagate hard drives. I've tried to load Windows XP with my reinstallation cd that came with the computer and get a message that windows requires an 80486 or later processor. This same computer with the smaller hard drive operated with windows xp. Any suggestions as to how to handle this problem?

Your new drive is the correct type for your system. The old ribbon cable (wiring) should be fine unless there is any sign of physical damage. Your new drive should be connected at the end of the cable, as the old one was. The new drive should already be jumpered for "cable select" operation when shipped from the factory.

The on-line user guide for the Dim 8200 lists the bus speed as 400MHz for a 1.6GHz P4 processor. ejn63 responded to your original question on another board with a reference to checking the system setup (BIOS) to be sure the CPU isn't locked into compatibility mode. This would be relevant to the original message you received when trying to install Windows, and the bus speed your BIOS is reporting. Check the BIOS setup screens and post a reply to ejn63 for additional information.

GM,

I checked to see that the processor is in normal mode and it is.  I still get a bus speed of 100 Mhz.  Any ideas of what to do next?  Thank you for your help thus far.

Try Dell Diagnostics. See my earlier post for the download. Use the version that creates a bootable floppy.

GM,

I tried to download and start the computer with the diagnostic cd and it would do nothing.  i think everything was loaded correctly.  Any suggestions?

Dell Diagnostics may be available on a CD originally delivered with your system, but I don't know that one can be created using the download file without additional steps using CD burning software and a floppy disk image to make a bootable CD.
 
If you have a bootable CD or floppy with Dell Diagnostics, make sure the CD or floppy drive is enabled as a boot device in the BIOS setup screens.
 
Creating a bootable floppy containing DOS and Dell Diagnostics is one of several options available, but is normally the easiest and most reliable. The link I offered earlier should be the CD120610.exe version that includes the capability to create a bootable floppy, but I see the instructions refer to the CDD1206.exe version, no matter which version is selected. I am unable to download the CD1220610.exe file to verify it's ability to create a bootable floppy. When I click on the download link I get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.

The floppy version should allow you to create a bootable floppy. The floppy can be tested for bootability on any system with a floppy drive, though the Dell Diagnostics may not be appropriate for every system.

GM,

I've had no success with the diagnostic floppy or cd.  Do you have any other ideas?  One person suggested that I buy a copy of Windows XP and use that to install instead of the reinstall cd.  What do you think?  Also do you think my processor is just gone bad?  I installed my old hard drive and the computer would not recognize it nor did the processor speed change.  Any idea what that means?
