Remote Control

If I customize a E310 and choose to buy the $19 remote control, is it the silver Microsoft one ( http://www.gamepc.com/images/labs/rev-xpmce2005-hwlg.jpg), or another brand?
Thanks.

P.S.  In another message I read that the remote Dell sends doesnt have a "more info" button.  I don't know if that button is important or not, but is this rumor true, and what is the effect.  On the Microsoft remote (link above), there is a "more info" button.

The Dell Remote I got recently (Sept.) looks almost exactly like the one pictured, with the same layout ... except the buttons on the dell are smaller. The number keys 0-9, * and # are TINY TINY! Like maybe 20% of the size of the keys on my tiny Samsung E317 flip-phone cell phone. The left edge of the "1" key is exactly 1 inch from the right edge of the "3" key, and the top of the "2" key is 1-1/16" from the bottom of the "0" key. Basically, a stamp could cover all the numbers at one time.

The remote itself is 2-1/4" wide so the size of those keys is inexcusable. They are 1/5" wide each. My thumbs hit 3 or four at a time no matter what. The remote is 6-1/4" long. The one pictured looks quite a bit larger.

The only button it does not have in relation to the picture you linked to is the "TV" power button on the upper left.

So the remote you got in September has the 'more info' button.  The one I got 2 weeks ago did not.  The more info button is used to rotate photos and to burn videos to DVDs among other things.  I can get around it by using my computer mouse but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a remote.  Any chance you could tell me what the remote model number is?  The one I have is 412-0673.

There's a button with an "i" on it and "MORE" written below it, opposite the "BACK" button, if that's what you mean (makes sense to me).

Does your remote look anything like what is pictured?

There is no obvious brand name or model no. anywhere on the remote. The only logo is the Windows logo under the Windows button.

It is printed with "US Patent 5,877,702" and this info is attached via sticker in the battery compartment:

RC1154013/00
3139 238 09871
MADE IN CHINA
HK01 04504 A 004502

Did you get the TV power button on yours?

Has anyone had problems with teh signal coverage on the Dell remote? I had mine a month ago and the reciever only seems to pick up a signal 5 ft away and within a 5 degree angle of the IR window on teh reciever. This seems very poor. Is this typical or should I send back to Dell and order a new one? Are there bettr brands out tehre with a stronger signal?

thanks

If you search for '412-0673' and then click on Remote Control for Dell Media Experience, you'll get a picture of the remote I recently pictured.  It looks exactly as shown (ie with no 'More Info' button).  I have no trouble with transmitting of this remote.  It works from 15' away, not even line of sight.  My only trouble with this remote is it is missing critical buttons.

Here's the one you mention. Mine is on the right. I got it in September. You say the one you got is the one that is shipping now?

Interesting ... Dell has replaced the "More Info" button on mine with a "Help" button on yours (it doesn't do the same thing?) ... and you can see that the blue buttons on your remote are labeled differently then on mine (which reads "Rec'd TV | Guide | Live TV | DVD Menu" where it looks like yours reads "Pictures | Music | DVD | Video").  How do you get the TV guide on yours? Does the middle button bring up the MCE interface or the "Dell Media Experience" - whatever that is?

Isn't the MCE remote supposed to meet some microsoft standard feature set?

To get to the guide you have to use the back key to get to top level.  There is no shortcut. The blue button brings up Media Center.  Seems like there needs to be 2 more buttons on mine:  more info and guide.  I wonder if there is a way to reprogram the remote.  I think your remote is more useful.

"I think your remote is more useful."

Yeah, looks that way to me, too.

I already have those shortcut buttons (your blue buttons) on my wireless keyboard.

As for reprogramming it, I don't know. It looks as if the two use identical hardware (same button size, spacing, layout. I wonder if they are even sending different signals? Anybody know? Any Moderator care to chip in?

I just asked a friend, and they got the same remote as me less than a month ago. You must be one of the first with that one.

I have the one on the right.  But, the remote stopped working today.  Worked for 2 days. Any ideas on how to fix it?  Or do I need a new one?   thanks
