Remove Startup Programs

How do I stop a program from automatically starting during boot?

It used to be easy in Win95, but in XP, I cannot find it. I do not want AIM to start.

It also starts when opening Outlook, even though I unchecked it in the Options.

Thanks.

The Startup tab within the System Configuration Utility contains a list of the programs that start during boot. See the following Dell Knowledge Base article for further information:

What is the Microsoft® System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG)?

Also run the msconfig utility (Start>Run>(type in)msconfig).

There's a tab, 'Startup' with all the programs.  You can deselect the one you don't want.  Once you do that, under the 'General' tab, it will then change from Normal startup to Selective Startup - that's okay because you are selectively choosing not to start a program.  On the very next reboot, they'll be a splash screen regarding the changes to the startup.  You can select a box to not have that pop up after that.

As for Outlook, there should be an option within the program itself to not load up on startup.  Doesn't AOL also have that option?
