Can someone tell me how to restore my computer to its original factory settings? I have a Dimension 8400.

MJ20S,

If your computer was made after July 15, 2004 the procedure here will restore it. If it was made before then you will have to reinstall Windows and will not be able to return to an exact image of the system as you received it.

moises319,

If your computer was made after 7/15/04 it came with the PC Restore program installed. If you have reinstalled Windows that program can no longer be used.

So there is no other possible way to do it, this means that I'm stuck with a worthless  computer.

Dell PC Restore is not the same as Windows System Restore.

If your hard drive contains an image of the original system configuration on a hidden partition, there are a couple of work-arounds that may enable you to restore it, but a clean install may be a better option.

The Dell PC Restore feature is a limited and fragile sample of imaging software. Imaging software allows an image of the entire drive or a single partition to be captured at any time, and additional images can be saved as your configuration develops. These images can be safely stored for restoration later if needed, even if the hard drive is replaced.

The image of the original factory configuration may be of limited value in comparison.

Can you tell me the workaround?

I made the mistake of installing another windows image on my inspiron 6000. I have the reinstallation CD and I know there is a hidden partition containing the original system configuration (I think). What is the best way to get back to the original system state?

TIA
