Returning from hibernate - Internet does not work

I often use hibernate on my desktop.

When I return from hibernate and try to use Internet Explorer I receive an error that it 'Cannot find server. The page cannot be displayed'. In other words, it cannot find the website. If I use Outlook, I find that I cannot send and receive emails. Pressing 'refresh' in IE or 'send/receive' in Outlook does not help.

What I have found is that by pinging the IP address of my DNS server seems to correct this, and that when I then press 'refresh' in Internet Explorer it works.

Could anyone give advice as to why this happens? I don't want to have to ping each time I return from hibernation to re-establish my Internet link.

Thanks

Elliot

In your post about the monitor you state you have Hibernate set to never?  Hibernate is normally not recommended for use on a desktop from what I've read on these boards.

Both Hibernate and Standby were originally designed for Laptops to conserve battery power.  Generally, just turning of the monitor and the hard drives, at a specified time, is all that's really necessary on a desktop.  However, 5 minutes for the monitor seems a little quick.  Although modern PC's and power supplies are much more reliable than older equipment, the constant on/off potentially can still be an issue down the line - it may not show up now or even 6 months from now, but at some point the MTBF can be affected by constant on/off.  My recommendation to customers is, if you turn your PC on, just to "check mail" and then power it off and then come back an hour later and do the same thing, instead of turning it off, set the monitor power and hard drives to turn off, as mentioned earlier in this post.  In many commercial applications (e.g. offices) the PC's are turned on in the morning and just left on until close of business.  Even screensavers are not a "necessary" item with color monitors like it was with old black and white or "green" colored monitors.

Apparently the DNS client is not waking up properly...

Try updating your BIOS, hard drivers, and make sure your XP installation is up to date.

Some software programs can interfere with hibernation and perhaps your Internet/DNS as well. Try shutting down all unneeded programs (when you do it in Task Manager, only shut down programs running in your account, not anything else like NETWORK SERVICE) and then put it in hibernation.
