REVISED: Re-installing IE Questions

Question

Hi, I am having a problem with my system - my Java Virtual Machine isn't being detected. This is something that happened within the past month and I have no idea how it happened.

I've tried downloading VM but it just won't "take" - when I check, it's still not being detected.

Someone suggested the following:

"Go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and click the reg edit opposite from #114 titled "enable reinstallation of internet explorer" a download box will come up chose "save" and save the file to a folder in your documents , then locate the file and double click it , it will ask if you want to enter this info to the registry , say yes .

Then go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo...p1/download.asp and re-download IE 6."

If I do this, will I lose my Outlook Express email, addresses, etc., as well as my IE bookmarks?

I'm a total newbie as respects knowing how to fix my computer.

ohdonna,

The reinstallation will not affect your OE messages, favorites, and the like. However, if you would like to be certain (always a good idea) you can copy your Favorites folder, your Windows Address Book (*.wab), and the entire folder containing your .dbx files to removable media prior to the reinstallation. Should something unexpected happed you can copy the favorites back and open Outlook Express and import the message folder and the Windows Address book file.

If you are attempting to download the Microsoft Virtual Machine and somehow the earlier installation was badly corrupted, you need to download an earlier version (5.00.3805) than the latest (5.00.3810) and install it prior to downloading and installiing 3810. You can download both from here.

Hi Denny, thanks so much for your email.

However, I already did what you suggested. I downloaded the 5.0.3805.0 version, then the 5.0.3809.0 update and then the 5.0.3810.0. After re-booting, I tested my system and it didn't detect VM. So I decided to to it again. When I did so, I didn't even get a message that it was already on my system. Instead, I was able to d/l the VM and the updates again.

Afterwards, though, it still wasn't on my system. This is so frustrating!

You'll never believe it but the problem turned out to be my Zone Alarm Pro.

I started to suspect it when I had the same problem with my IE, Netscape, Opera and Mozilla. So I wrote to ZA and they wrote back, saying to uncheck the "Load Zone Alarm at Start Up" box then reboot. When I did that, I went to the sites that were not working and now they were!

Then I turned on Zone Alarm again and went to the sites - they no longer worked.

I've written to the ZA Techs to ask how to fix ZA so I won't have this problem any longer. I'm waiting for a response.

Who wudda thought?

OHDONNA, A Dell Moderator posted this awhile back and it may help with your problem using ZAP. I know that it worked for me. 1. Open the Zone Alarm Control Panel and go to Program Control. Disable Privacy for Internet Explorer in Zone Alarm.To disable right click on Internet Exporer and go to Options to Disable Privacy for Internet Explorer. 2. Open your Browser and clear Temporary Internet Files by going to Tools and choosing Internet Options and clicking Delete files. If already on a internet page, refresh the page. If not open up an internet page where you had trouble before. Re-enable Privacy for Internet Explorer in ZAP.

What this does is to establish a clean copy of the JavaScript. If you have trouble getting into certain sites agin you might have to do the process again.

Hi, I just logged on here and saw your message. Thank you but the problem is officially FIXED!!!

ZA Tech Support said to go to Ad Blocking and turn it Off. I did that and now I can see Java VM!
