Run CHKDSK /F
I have a blue screen on my computer that says it won't start windows and I should run CHKDSK /F. It goes on to list STOP: 0X0000007B - which I have looked up and the problem is listed as an Inaccessable Boot Device. Okay, all the troubleshooting advice I have found begins with starting up windows in safe mode. It's just not happening - F8 doesn't work, scrolling through the options and selecting safe mode doesn't work. The system seems to be headed that way then I always get the blue screen with the same message back. So my question is, is there another way to start up windows in safe mode? How am I supposed to run CHKDSK when I can't even get windows to start with.

I believe you can boot to the XP CD, access the repair console and run it from there. Before you do that, however, please run the dell diagnostics. Hopefully you can access them when you see the Dell Screen by pressing F12 and then selecting diagnostics. Run all hard drive and ram tests, including a surface scan.
If you can't get to the dell diagnostics software that way, you can also access it by booting to a dell drivers CD (if you have one). The diagnostics can also be downloaded from support.dell.com but they need to be run from a true dos environment (not XP)

chkdsk C: /P /R
(put one space before each /)
The /F switch does not work for chkdsk in the Recovery Console

Okay - ran the F12 tests as suggested and this is what came up:
Error code 0F00:0244
Msg:Block 5730744: Uncorrectable/data error or media is write proected
Then Error code 0F11:1A44
Same Msg
Just for fun I then tried to boot XP with the CD - nada.

There is a chance the Hard drive is shot. Check all connections.
You didn't by chance use partitioning software prior to this problem? (example: Partition magic)
Also, you may try debugging the HD to clear all formatting information. Then start over with a fresh format and install.
That's all I can think of.

Not sure what that means. It wouldn't boot with XP CD, you couldn't fix HD with chkdsk run from Recovery Console, or...?
