Running Scan Disc

Question

After doing some reading about Scan Disc I came across a few references that advise against checking "automatically fix errors" in the scan.

What's the best way to run scan disc? A quick scan or a thorough scan? I had some problems with the hard drive on a Dimenion 8100 which I mentioned in a previous post. I'd like to run scan disc correctly when I get the new hard drive. When I attempted to run a thorough scan on my computer it got to about 241,000 out of 2 and a half million and the computer shut itself down. I have never seen this before. Any suggestions? Why would you be given the option to automatically correct errors if it can do more damage than good?

u can like umm, try running fdisk for better results, then run scandisk again on dos mode, and after the standard scandisk it will prompt u if u want to do do a full scan of your computer to look for bad sectors. that will probably correct any issue that is causing ur scandisk to stop and shut down.

I thought f disk was a tool to delete or create partitions on your hard drive. You are probably right about running scan disk in a different mode for brtter results. Anyone have an opinion on having scan disk automatically correct errors? Thank You.

You are correct. FDISK is clearly not a tool which will do anything to correct your problem (although it will effectively remove all information from the partition it is used on). I have always selected the "automatically fix errors" option when running scandisk. You might try running a thorough scandisk without that option to see if it completes. If so, then try again with the option selected.

Thanks Denny. As soon as I get set up I'll give Scan Disk another try. Sometimes the more research you do, the more confused you get!
