Scan disc & Restore on Dimension 4100 with ME

Discovered the other day that my scan disc did not complete its task, got error

"ScanDisk Found an Error on Local Disk (C:)"
"The 'C:\Program Files\Dell\Resoluiton Assistant\MotiveAssistant\log' folder contains incorrect information about 'mad_mot.log'.

The size of the file is different from the size recorded for it in its folder.  If you attempt to open the file before correcting this error, the file's...."

I selected "Repair error." and "OK", the scan continued and error showed up again.  Selected "Delete effected file" and "OK" Error showed up again after scanning for a while.  Had to cancel the scan.

Any one seen this one before, I'd appreciate the input

jb_smitty,

Resolution Assistant hasn't been supported by Dell for over a year. See if uninstalling it (directions here) will eliminate the error message.

Thank you Denny for the tip.  I'll get rid of it.

However, that was just the beginning of a chain of events.  I tried System Restore because of some proplems I encountered lately - like MSN running a sycronisation which does not stop, and other things.  Guess that was not such a good idea, because I've lost Norton AV in the process.  Need to reinstall it because it does not start any more.

Actually, because I've accumulated all kinds of glitches and hang-ups, for quite some time now Word shuts down frequently with a "MSVCRT.DLL" error as well as explorer errors, I'm thinking of reinstalling WINME OS.  Any wise ideas about that?

smitty,

A reformat and clean install is an excellent solution to "all kinds of glitches and hangups." It's time consuming but it does give you a nice clean starting point.

Denny,

That truely would be a clean beginning.  Eventually I would like to go to XP instead of ME.

How can I keep my data save without taking it off the C-drive, before a ME reinstall.  Don't they suggest to reformat?  I don't want to loose all that stuff.  Have only one machine to work with.

jb_smitty,

Everything on C:\ will be removed during a format/install. If you have a CD-R drive you can copy the perishable data to there. A Zip drive is a second choice. You don't have to copy anything that is already on CD (such as your applications) but should copy email messages, address book, documents you have created, and that sort of thing.

Smitty...

I too had same probs you are experiencing. After MANY attempts at self-fix I contacted several Dell Techs - who provided POOR sprt. Until--- a super Dell tech contacted me and provided following fix that made all well again. I too couldn't do a "restore" and had Word probs and lost NAV too -  just like you. So this may be the answer for you.

Also - I've been through the "Format HD and reinstall OS - and must warn you that is a Looong painful process and ONLY last resort (for me).

In Safe Mode : Start/Run/"scan reg/fix"    (W/o quotes, with space after scanreg) This apparently fixed my corrupted regristry and made all well again.

Good Luck,  RAGBOX
