scan disk and defrag problems
Have previously been able to do a scan disk and defrag following instruction given by Denny at
www.djdenham.com/Scandisk-text.htm However this time I could not get either to complete because they kept restarting. Scan disk kept saying something was writing to drive. Defrag said drive contents changed. All programs were closed except explorer and systray.
Questions:
1-When deleting windows temp files it indicated that there were hidden files and folders. I did not delete these files so could this be causing the problem?
2-If I run the scan disk and defrag in safe mode do I still have to do the Control+alt+delete and leave only explorer and systray in the program window?
3- If I run in safe mode how do I get there, by hitting F8 at the Dell logo screen?
By the way I have a Dimension 4100 running Windows ME. Thanks for any assistance

I occasionally run scandisk on the computers I use at work. They restart many times until I eventually get a message about whether or not I want to keep receiving the "Scandisk has restarted..." message. When I click NO it continues without need of further input from me.
The work computers are connected to a network, which is why they are always starting scandisk again and again. Is your Internet connection active when you're running the program?
Running scandisk from safe mode loads the bare minimum so you shouldn't have to go in and manually close out anything else.

I recently got comcast internet, but when I did the scandisk and defrag I unplugged the cable for the cable router so I dont think this would be causing the possible problem.
Thanks

Hi
Tap the F8 key as your computer boots up, Select safe mode, then hit enter. once your in safe mode try the Scandisk, and defrag, should work. Anti-virus and firewalls can keep writing to your drive, causing the problems you mentioned.
