Screensaver Question!
So I would like to find out how to install a new screensaver? After downloading some of them they seem to want to set themselves up as a program all it's own on my system, so I don't bother installing them beyond their initial setup window! Where are the screensaver files kept in Win XP Home? Can I not just go out and download a screensaver file to the folder XP keeps them in, so I could just rightclick on the desktop and change my screensaver to the new one like I always do? Does anyone know of any good links to free screensavers that are not cheesy or lousy!

Did you get your other issues straghtened out?
Anyway, just my personal opinion, screensavers are generally junk. The XP ones are fine. One of them, My Pictures Slideshow, will, not surprisingly, scroll through the pictures in your My Pictures folders. I use the default Windows XP one, but see very little of it since my monitor shuts off after a few minutes.

Oh...........my other issues huh!!! Well I talked to Dell Tech Support and they are going to replace my motherboard as the BIOS is corrupt. They tried everything over the phone so it's come to this!! I am still waiting to hear from them hopefully today to tell me when they are coming! No matter what they did, they could not get my system to recognize the hard drive as "present" under the boot sequence section. My brother who is a bit of a tech junkie says it maybe a bum controller or something called "RAID"????Anyways enough is enough with a brand new system! It's caused me grief from day one! Thanks for all your help though! It's good to know I can always hang out here and get some support too!!

Question for Osprey? Why do you have your monitor set to shut off after a few minutes? Would you be able to give me some advice on the best power scheme for me? I use my laptop for home use -- not in the workplace. I turn it on in the morning and I usually shut down once in the afternoon and once at night before I go to bed. Do you think I should be on some sort of an alternate power scheme. I have read all the documentation on power and it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. For some reason, I am drawing a blank about power schemes.

Finally!!!! DELL Tech came to my place and installed a new motherboard and power supply( he caught the broken power supply upon installing the new motherboard)! Everything seems ok now as my hard drive is being recognized under the "boot sequence" in the BIOS . I am a little disappointed in Dell for having shipped out a PC with so many problems! Anyways it's ok now so once again thanks to everyone here again for all their help!!

As a matter of fact, yes, I set my monitor to turn off after ten minutes. With laptops, it's a whole different matter. Power consumption is a primary concern. Your laptop should have different schemes depending on whether it is plugged in or not. On my Latitude, my scheme is called Max Battery. When plugged in, the monitor and hard drive never turn off and the system never goes into standby or hibernate. On battery, the monitor and hard drive turn off after three minutes and the system goes into hibernate after ten minutes.

Osprey, I have now set my Laptop on the power scheme for Home/Office. I am noticing a big difference in performance. My laptop is really humming and running fast. I also set it to the Windows Logo screen saver.

A comment here, for what it's worth. My first computer was a Compaq with a Pentium processor. It was a lemon that needed a new hard-drive before end of warranty and then another new hard drive after that.
Next computer was a Gateway. They were having a special on Celeron processors. So I took it. Absolutely NO problems with the Celeron processor.
I now have a Dell Laptop. They wanted to sell me a Pentium processor but I specifically asked for the Celeron, for obvious reasons. Again, the Dell with Celeron processor has absolutely no problems.
