Sending Fax - 'Line is Busy.'

Question

Upon attempting to send a fax, Fax Monitor tells me, "The line is busy." I don't know whether it is referring to the line that the modem calls out on or the line for the fax number I wish to call. In any case, I know that the line for the fax number I wash to call is not busy because I can call it on my phone and hear it ring. I know also that the number it dials out on is not in use for any other purpose.

I have no trouble using the modem to connect to the internet.

I have successfully used the same modem and fax applications for years on this system. The most recent such use was a few days ago, before a Windows update.

I have removed and reinstalled the XP fax accessory. This did not help.

Make sure your internet dial up access (if you have dialup)  is not active or has the modem 'captured'.

I am not connected to the internet or trying to connect when I try to send the fax, if that's what you mean. I can pick up the phone and call the fax number. The line is open. The number dials.

Uninstall the modem in the Windows Device Manager then restart Windows and it will be detected and reinstalled (refreshed). See if that helps.

If the modem works with the dial-up internet and does not detect a "line is busy" then it should also work with fax. However, if you do have dial-up internet access make sure your dial-up is not "capturing" the modem and causing the problem. You may have to go into the Windows task manager and make sure the Dialup is not active.
