sfc_os.dll can not be found

several weeks ago I had gotten a virus. I down loaded a spyware to fix the viruses I had. Since then all sort of things have gone wrong with my pc. The main one being that any time I bring my pc up I get the message "this application has failed to start because sfc_os.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."  Now I know that I have 2 files that have this in them because I can find them when I do a search but they say there is nothing there. Also when I try to loan a cd into my pc it will not read it. It acts like there is not there. It will load my printer either. One day it was working and the next it says its not there. I down loaded regcure to try and fix this file but nothing happened. Can some one help me with this. Do I need to just delete verything out of my pc and start over and if so how do I go about doing that? If anyone can help my I would appreicate it. Thanks.

Sounds like the virus damage is pretty extensive, post your PC Model so we can help guide you to a re installation, or repair of XP, If you have any important data, I suggest copying it to an external usb drive before you do anything else.

I really appreciate your help on this. My system is a  4300S. I know its old but I have never had any problems with it before now. How do I go about saving my files that I want to save. You said send them to a usb. Tell me how I can do this. I have started trying to send some of my files to my pc at work to see if I could save them there to be sent back to my pc later. Will that work? Now let me tell you that I am really not very smart when it comes to computers so you will have to explain every thing to me very simply. Again thanks for your help.

Yes, if you have a connection to your office PC, you can do it this way. but may take some time if you have very much data to save.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp  here is a guide to a clean reinstall of XP

After you reinstall XP you have to install drivers in a specific order explained here

Your drivers found here

Or use your Dell Resouce CD if you have it, just follow the sequence of installation outlined in the second link, you can skip the first driver, your PC does not have the DSS or NSS software requirement.

Look at your Dell XP disc, what service pack level is it SP1 or 2?

I have tried to follow the instructions that you sent me but when I load my dics into my pc I either get nothing or I get the message -

Winlonon.exe - Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because sfc_os.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

Either way I can not get into setup. Can you tell me what I could do to get there? Thanks.
