show window contents while dragging

Dear Dell Moderator,

Thanks for finally letting us know about this issue.  I have to say that it caused me TREMENDOUS grief.  I ended up re-installing the operating system because of this issue.  I'm happy that it wasn't actually a software bug.

I dont see how the "Show window contents.." option would cause video corruption, especially since it looked to me that the "Dell Media Experience" software took up the full screen, not allowing any windows to be dragged.  (I uninstalled it shortly after seeing this forum, so I didn't really play around with the DME).

Can't Dell just put code in to disable the "Show window contents.." feature while the DME is launched, and to restore it when the user exits out of it?

That is a good question, but I'm not a programmer so I don't if I can be done.
What information I do know, is that during initial testing of the DME software, it
was shown that video corruption would occur if the "Show Window Content...." setting was
enabled. So, it was decided to turn this feature off when the DME software is installed.
I will pass the suggestion on to my engineer contact, and if Dell decides to try and implement
it, I would figure it may be in a patch or next release of the DME software.
But, this is in no way a guarantee that the suggestion will be implement or that Dell will even act on it.
I will simply pass on the good suggestion.

i have some similar problems with my Latitude D600, when Show window content while dragging is enabled i can't see any icons while i drag them. I read some similar topics but didn't find a working solution. I don't have DME installed on the box so this can't be the thing (or is DME now included in any other software).

could anybody help me please

Pardon my inexperience, but if you uninstall DME you will then live without it? Will u use something instead or reinstall it?

I too experienced this problem, and had to uninstall Dell media experience, but that got rid of the problem. Dell obviously needs to patch DME!

It is actually the PCMService from the DME that cause the problem.

Getting it out the Run section of the registry and putting it in the startup will avoid the problem...

Is it possible that initializing the "show window contents while dragging" may cause the Blue Screen  Stop error code:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Just a bump because I really need an answer regarding my post above.

Had the same problem and only discovered this forum  for the correct cure!!  - however if all else fails try the work around that I obtained from an XP newsgroup - a small program that runs on start up to enable the show windows contents while dragging  - download the small file and drag a shortcut to it into your  'Start/ All programs /Startup' menu

Dell -- thanks for posting this information. I was very confused by this initially. I have uninstalled the DME & hope that will fix the problem.

This seems like a bad design decision on Dell's part. If you're going to mess with user settings, then put up message explaining what's happening so your customers aren't left in the dark. Then the user could elect to stop turning on the "show windows while dragging" setting, so they would stop getting the warning message, or they could elect to leave the setting off. Better yet, put up a message explaining possible video corruption & let the user decide what to do. There is always some risk of confusing the user, but invisibly revoking a user selection is hardly an improvement!

Weg - thank's and welcome. I'm the one who started this thread - not dell. Dell did nothing! They. Dell, just sent me around the world three times on this issue and in the end they, Dell, said to format the hard drive and reinstall everything on my one week old $3500 computer. It was others who responded with what was causing the problem and found the fix - just for the record.
