Shutting down my Windows XP takes forever, eventually hangs
Help! Just reformatted my Inspiron e1505 and everything is working great, except shut down now takes forever.
The computer starts up quickly, but won't shut down. It says "logging off" forever, then my computer eventually goes to sleep, and I have to do a hard shutoff/restart.
I'm the only user on it, and I've tried defragging it and running msconfig to limit the amount of things running at startup, but none of these help.
Any tips greatly appreciated!

First, make sure you have the latest Service Pack for your os, Windows XP has alot of problems like this that were resolved in Sp2 and Sp3. Sometimes it was an audio file, sometimes a mouse driver, and sometimes it was a nic driver issue. try this, disable both the wireless and the ethernet ports in Device Manager. see how it does. Then enable ethernet only and see how it does.

Another thing worth trying is to install the (free) additional MS service, UPHclean. That helps with some shut down problems.
