Are you using an antivirus program set to scan all incoming email? If so, disable the email scanning. You will still be protected against opening or saving infected files if your scanner is resident in the background.

Also, if you have Background Compacting turned on in OE > Tools > Options > Maintenance > turn that off to see if it helps.
Then Compact your message store manually See here

I am having the same problem except the error message says, End Program--Sample. What the heck is "Sample?"
