Sound/Internet Icon failure/Vista not recognizing antivirus - others reporting same problem lately

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what's going on.  Here are the symptoms:

1) no sound, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers does nothing
2) attempting to play any music/videos fails (as in, the songs won't even start)
3) internet icon in lower right tray shows no connection at all, yet I have full internet - attempts to diagnose and repair the problem says no problems
4) Windows Security Center shows I have no firewall or antivirus running, but I have both running from non-Windows providers (PC-cillin)
5) no network connections display if I open to browse local networks

What could this be?

Thanks.

As an update, two other threads report this same problem:

It is important to post your model computer & your Vista version when asking a question. Have you run the Dell Diagnostics to see if there's a hardware failure? Check all the Network and Sharing Center settings for a clue to that problem. Diagnose & Repair might help, too.

Sorry, didn't know that was important to do.

I'm using a Dell E520 and Windows Vista.

I haven't run any Dell tools.  Dell direct-connected to my computer for about 2 hours (two different reps) and couldn't fix it.  I'll try the diagnostic you suggest.

I ran the diagnostic last night.  Aside from errors in items that aren't hooked up (e.g. I obviously could not hear rear speaker sounds since I have no rear speakers), there were no errors.  The problems I described have not changed.

Also, to clarify my unhelpfu statement earlier: I have Windows Vista Home Premium.

Uninstall Adobe and reinstall Vista- it should save all your files, but back up just in case. Do not reinstall Adobe. I've reinstalled Vista twice in the last day, and reinstalled Adobe once only to have it corrupt the system again. Good luck. I sent a bug report to Adobe to let them know.
