I have the same problem, apparently. I have a E520, Intel G965 chipset, dua core 3.06 hz cpu, with a Sigmatel sound card. According to the specs, , Sigmatel driver version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier is excluded, and the the latest Dell update for mine (according to Dell update by service tag) is to 6.10.0.5343. If i try to run the file recommended above (http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R171788.exe), it results in an error, "Object not present).

 

When i try to run Vista SP1, the license dialog box comes up the text goes past the margins and you cannot scroll sideways, and i cannot see any "I Agree box" at the end. Thus NEXT is greyed out. The text ends with " EULAID:VistaSP1_R1.0_Upgrade_RTL_en-US" My screen resolution is 1024 X 768, and increasing it does not help. My PC is an x86 not x64, and i have the right file.

To answer the OP, the drivers listed by microsoft (aside from logitech) are not incompatible with SP1 -- they are merely sometimes incompatible with the upgrade process to SP1.  SP1 reinstalls all drivers.  The drivers listed sometimes fail to reinstall or install incorrectly.

 

If you notice any problems following the upgrade to SP1, simply reinstall the drivers and you will be fine.  This is why dell and other OEMs can ship SP1 with the conflicting drivers -- the conflict only occurs during the upgrade, not with SP1 itself.

 

To be safe, just download the driver pack from dell beforehand -- chances are though that you won't need to use it.

Sorry for butting in to this thread but I have a SP1 installation problem; I have an Inspiron 6400 laptop with Vista HP as the OS. So far I have not been offered the SP1 download by MS but I have been on my wife's PC (Inspiron 530) and it was a simple and quick install. I assumed that I have not been offered the download ( I have the computer set up for Automatic Updates) because of a driver problem. Sigma or Connexant or something.  However, I read in this thread that even if I do (say) download the full SP1 from the Update site, then installing it will not cause a problem because if the driver is not compatible, then the drivers can simply be reinstalled to correct any problem.

Or, would it just be better to wait for mid-April when SP1 is said to be going to be made available to all Vista owners with any driver 'problems' overcome?

What you have said is generally correct.  The first thing you should do though is to confirm that a driver is what is blocking SP1 from being pushed through windows update.  There are 8 or so reasons (of which drivers are 1) that SP1 may not be delivered to you:  http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343

 

If you rule out the other causes, then look at the list of drivers in the above article and see which ones you have (device manager is useful for this -- if you need specific instructions on how to check, just ask).  If possible, check with Dell (or other relevant sources) and see if updated drivers are available.  If they are, install them and see if SP1 is delivered via windows update.

As you have stated, the real problem with drivers listed in the microsoft article (aside from logitech) is that they *may* need to be reinstalled following SP1.  You should download the current drivers for any effected hardware prior to installing SP1 to make such a reinstallation easier, should it be required.

 

To answer your question, I personally would (and did) install SP1 even if my drivers were listed in the microsoft article.  I would first try to find updated drivers (they were not available in my case).  The bits for SP1 are not going to change between now and whenever you do finally decide to get it -- it's final at this point.

 

The only driver show stopper for me would be having the logitech webcam driver mentioned -- which can cause a Blue Screen of Death (Stop error) during the SP1 installation.  In this case, wait for microsoft to patch one of their own files -- it's not the driver that is bad.

For some PC's here may be more to this than the offending drivers that MS lists.  

 

I deleted all known instances of the offending Sigma file (6.10.5511.0 or earlier; mine was 6.10.0.5343), and stoppped it from loading in the BIOS.

I now have no audio. I also deleted Intel Igdkmd32.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403, as i have updated to version 7.14.10.1437. Still no go.

I have been through all the drivers that are listed by M$ and checked to see if there are any new drivers to update and was told  in each case that I have the latest.  I have downloaded the full (large) SP1 and have it sitting in my downloads folder but I am reluctant to install it if I may be offered the smaller version idc. I am up-to-date with all the Win Vista Updates, so SP1 is likely to be a bit cosmetic and a few other benefits.  I think ftb I will wait and see.

 

I don't have Logitec and the other drivers listed are similar but not the same as those quoted on the M$ website.

 

So, in summary, I'll wait and see if M$ come up with any patches or suggestions regarding SP1 and then try installing it later next month when matters may have been resolved (or not).

Running Vista Home Premium on Dell E1505 laptop

 

All other updates have precedence over Vista SP1, so if you haven't installed the latest Windows Defender definition file update, Vista SP1 won't show up.

In my case SP1 was blocked by two items:
1. The Sigma Tel Driver sound driver was back level for SP1 according to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343 however Dell had no driver available for my E1505 laptop on it's download site. I contacted Dell as was told to install a version which failed install (hardware missing) and left me with no sound. I had to revert to the out of date driver.

Then while reading a thread on the Neowin Net message board http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?s=d8fc426c8d7ce5a2502561c3b53ec797&showtopic=626915&st=0 I found (also mentioned earlier in this thread) http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R171788&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235764
which installed perfectly and upgraded my system beyond the required version. Still no SP1 offering.

Post Install

I have/had four issues after SP1

1. System won't sleep, maybe caused by #4 below??

 

2. System would not display sound adjuster icon-cleared after a few reboots

was also grayed out and could not be checked when entering Properties->Notifications area

 

3. Windows sounds were barely audible - had to adjust them to maximum and everything else way down

 

4. constant chatter with deploy.akamaitechnologies.com from some system component

BTW the E1505 and I6400 are the same machine AFAIK. My case says E1505, Windows System says I6400

Re Amyuni Driver 

 

Go to Control Panel --> Window Updates (classic view)

On my machine it was showing as an Optional update.  

2. An optional update to AMYUNI Document Converter that I had no reason to install, but did after understanding it may block SP1. SP1 was immediately offered after this install.

Could you  tell me where you got this download.  I use Family Tree 2006 which needs this Doc Converter and it is missing. I get the warning that v 2.10 is required each time I open the programme.
