SpkSet.exe - Speaker Settings not saving

Hi, I have Altec Lansing 5.1 Surround Speakers and for some reason it keeps reseting my options in SpkSet.exe back to 2/2.1 Speakers everytime I restart the computer. SpkSet.exe came with the Creative/SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Sound Card. What can I do to keep it from reseting my options?

Unfortunately, without a Service Tag in your profile, I am unable to access your system specifics. However, try setting the number of speakers under Click Start | [Settings] | Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices. With the Windows speaker settings configured properly, it is possible the Creative mixer may now recognize the number of attached speakers and retain the correct option.

I put my service tag into my profile. But about the Control Panel, I did chose the option to Syncronize it with the Control Panel in the program, but I will try to change it through the Control Panel.

cdn415,

There have been several other 5.1 users who have experienced a similar problem. What are your current Creative "Environment Deck" settings for:
  • Environment,
  • speakers, and
  • CMSS;
and for "Super Environment Presets":
  • Category and
  • Presets;

and in the Surround Sound "System Menu", do you have:
  • dissociate mixer settings checked, or unchecked?

Although I have a different desktop PC, I have encountered the exact same frustrating problem. I keep resetting the 5.1 setting, it keeps it for a while, and at random looses this setting. I suspected activating some kind of software caused the resetting back to 2 speakers, but even with trial and error could not find any software or games that could have caused the reset. It seems to me that it is truly a random reset, not necessarily on a reboot. The 'synchronisation' checkbox that was referred to in a previous reply is not an option with the audio controller that I use (SiS 7012, AC97 Codec ALC 650). I hope to get this thread restarted, for all the experts I approached thus far had never encountered this specific problem, so they were unable to provide a solution.

Well I have just kept setting it back to 5.1 and it only seems to switch back about once a month now. It is very annoying though. I personally think either windows is not saving this option in control panel, the program is not saving it, or a program/game keeps changing it that doesnt support 5.1 speakers. I'm going to check for an update for the SpkSet.exe program again.

I think we are all using some game or program that keeps resetting it.

My kids play GTA Vice City and use MSN messenger 3/4plus! on my PC, programs that I don't use.

But usually, after they've worked on my PC, it is suddenly reset to 2 speakers. Come to think of it, it has been like that before GTA Vice City was introduced to my PC, so perhaps the clue lies with MSN.

I'll be trying to keep my kids away from my PC for a full week to see if MSN is the cause. Wish me luck.

Well I'm almost positive it's not MSN Messenger because I've never used it. Also it did this 2 speaker reset when i first got my computer without anything installed. I think it could be some program that was preinstalled by Dell because I had another problem with another setting not saving on something else and it was infact a program Dell installed. I'm also not sure that it could be my Windows XP or Harddrives. Windows XP doesn't seem to save any of it's settings. I have RAID 0 Dual 120GB Harddrives and I'm beginning to wonder if XP has some capability/bugs with RAID Configurations.
