sprtcmd.exe at shutdown

I'm running XP and once again on an update the support center software (sprtcmd.exe) is not allowing me to shutdown my computer. This has taken place since the last update of the software on 10/02/08. I have been unable to remove the program with install/uninstall. I would appreciate someone helping me uninstall this continously aggravating "support" software.

Thanks,

Tom

"sprtcmd.exe" is a known file from Dell. It is used by Dell Support Center.
"sprtcmd.exe" is installed in the C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin folder.

I would disable that program from starting up when you start Windows.

If you need to run the program, run it manually.

To remove Dell Support from startup:
Right-click the Dell Support icon in your tray, and select Dell Support Settings
Un-check "Run on Windows startup"> apply

To remove Dell Support Center from startup:
Start> Run
Type in msconfig.exe
click OK
Go to Startup tab
Uncheck the dsca box
Click the OK > Restart

Once it is disabled, reboot and then delete the program.  It is causing problems for a lot of people.  Let them fix the issues before reinstalling it.

Thanks for replying Bay Wolf.

I followed your instructions:
"To remove Dell Support Center from startup:
Start> Run
Type in msconfig.exe
click OK
Go to Startup tab
Uncheck the dsca box
Click the OK > Restart"

However, after restarting I still couldn't uninstall the Dell Support Center.

I received the following message during the uninstall process:

"Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas F. Maguire\Local Settings\Application Data\Support Soft\Dell Support Center\Thomas F. Maguire\State\Logs\sprtcmd.log. Pleast shut down all applications, then click retry."

I did get a message upon restart that I didn't know how to interpret regarding the altered startup. I ignored that message and then tried to uninstall. That's when I got the Error 1306 message.

Bring up the Command Window (Run Windows) by pressing Windows + R.

Type in msconfig and press Enter.

Under the General tab, choose the Selective startup bullet if you're not already using that mode.

Then, under the Startup tab, uncheck the boxes for dscactivate and SupportSoft sprtcmd.

Click Apply or OK and restart Windows.

EDIT:

Now to uninstall the program.

When you startup your computer, you will get a message that says that you are starting up in a Selective startup.  That is normal.

Once the program is uninstalled, you can go back and set your startup for "Normal" on the General tab.

Thanks, Bay Wolf.

That finally got the program uninstalled.

I appreciate the timely responses. I didn't

feel like living with this problem for a moment

more than necessary.

I just wanted to say thank you...I was having the exact same problem and the above steps worked for me.  I had been trying for the past 4 days to figure out what was going on.  I'm not very computer savvy so assumed something was wrong with my computer.  I didn't realize a software update was causing my issues with sprtcmd.exe.  Anyway...thank you!

I cannot find dscactivate under the Startup tab. I see dsca and DSAgnt, but not dscactivate. Also, when I uncheck anything I receive the following message:

An Accessed Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log onusing an Administrator account to make the specified changes.

What do I do now?

I think he meant 'deactivate' those two things by unchecking the box next to them.

Nevermind, I think I was wrong on that one.

The  error means that your login is not set up as an administrator for the PC.  Someone else should have administrator rights (or perhaps you have another login) and they will have to log in to do this.

I got that same administrative access message, but I was still able to make the changes.  After I restarted the computer, I went back in and looked and dsca and sprtcmd had been stopped at startup.  If you go into control panel and look under user accounts, it should say there whether you have administrator access or not.  If you set everything up, it's likely you do.  I'm listed as an administrator account, but I still got that access denied message...not sure what's up with that.  Try it again...it worked for me anyway.

I'm not sure that "deactivate" is what he meant, as dsca.exe seems to be a related file. But that still leaves the questions of Administrator Access. How do I check who is the administrator? I'm the one who set up everything when the PC arrived from Dell. How do I check/change those rights?

I want to deactivate at start up but not remove dell support.  If I go in and uncheck the the items listed at start up I receive the message that i am running in selective mode. You indicated that the program could then be removed and change back to run in normal mode.  Will I be able to change back to normal mode if I do not remove the program.   Dell recommends that I back up my system to the date prior to the upgrade.  Unfortunatley, I do not know exactly when it ran.  Why do they do these things us?

I've had this problem for a few days now and will follow the instructions from Bay Wolf once I've had time to think about them!

Thank you Bay Wolf.

What I'm worrying about is whether I'll need this program after I've uninstalled it.

The other thing is that surely Dell must know by now about this problem.  How often do they update?

How likely is it that there'll be a fix in the next update?

Kind regards to all fellow sprtcmd sufferers.

Hi Bay Wolf,

Thanks for taking the lead on this - I'm experiencing the same frustration and am a first time forum user - unfortunately I'm stumbling at the first hurdle as I can't locate the "Dell Support icon in your tray" you mention. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Dennises Dog, I too couldn't find the Dell Support icon in the Task Bar.  The only Dell icon I could find there, and you have to expand it to see it, is for Dell Quick Set.

Trying to get at it from the Programs menu didn't help either.

Another thing that proved a hurdle for me was not being sure whether the procedures in Message 2 were alternatives, or something that needed to be done in two separate steps.  I think it must be two alternatives, in which case I think I can manage the second, but I'd prefer to have some reassurance on that before I delete anything.

I'd also like to know how to run the program if I find I need to get it back, or when and where to download the program once this bug has been removed.
