SSBkgdUpdate.exe
Everytime I start my computer a window pops up wanting permission to run the following from
an unknown publisher: SSBkgdUpdate.exe Is this OK to do?

Hi, That is not an window file, and is not required to run at startup. You can remove that file through the control panel, more info HERE.

Google's telling me it's an automatic update for Scansoft software (now merged with a company called Nuance).
A product list below - if you have any of these (possibly including software that came with a printer or scanner), then that update is legit. If you don't want it to auto-update, then check in the program itself to see if you can turn the auto-update off.
