Startup Stalled at Cursor on Welcome Screen

I can only get to the desktop with Ctrl+Alt+Del. The 45+ processes are using  100% CPU but I can't pick up which processes dominate. Even without any end process command, the processes rapidly shut down and my Dim8200 (WinXP sp2 Home)  carries on normally. When I create a boot log in safe mode, I notice the last driver loaded is kmixer.sys.(In fact, it loads 5 times!). Where can I go from here to avoid this annoying and worrisome hangup.

First and foremost the 100% CPU Usage in itself indicates a virus / spyware activity. Scan your computer with a good anti-spyware and anti-virus (updated one) and see if it picks up some viruses or spyware and whether it is able to clean them up
