Stuck in Recovery Console!

Question

I'm trying to recover some windows xp corrupted system 32 files on my dell dimension e520, but I run into a problem when I get to the Recovery Console stage, after going in through the F12 route.

It asks: which windows installation would you like to log on to? 1: C\:windows 2. F:\minint

I press the figure 1, as detailed in your email, then nothing happens!

Any advice gratefull received!

If the Recovery Console is not recognising your install of Windows it means either   1.  The installation is too corrupted to be recognised   2.  The hard drive is bad.   When booting up chose the option to enter the Dell Diagnostics and run that on the hard drive. Try that first

Thanks, Dunedin. The Dell support team checked my hard drive and says it's okay! So, where does that leave me?

I don`t know what your original error message was. I think it might have been

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

If so, this is a corrupted registry message and the only way I know to repair it is with the Recovery Console
In your case the registry seems to be so so badly corrupted that the Recovery Console cannot recognise the operating system

Grasping at straws
Have you tried it a few times, just in case it succeeds?

Check in the BIOS to make sure the hard drive is recognised

I`m assuming you have tried all the Safe Mode options

Last Known Good Config

System Restore with Command Prompt

If none of these help I`m afraid you will have to reinstall XP and that would lose all your data. If you need to back up your data first you could put the hard drive in another machine and recover it that way.

Sorry, but I don`t think there is anything else you can do
