Symantec GOBACK 3

I have GOBACK 3  as part of my Norton SystemWorks 2003 disk which I have not yet installed. Is it worthwhile to install this, for Windows XP? This program purports to go back to a previous time.

Win XP System Restore does something like this but I believe restores only system files while I think GOBACK 3 does more than this.

Frank-M,

I don't use it myself, but many posters here who use XP indicate that they are very pleased with Goback as a backup solution

I use GoBack3 Deluxe and would not be with out it. I used it twice today. I was trying to reinstall Mozilla 1.7 and FireFox 0.9 and ran into some problems. I did a restore with GoBack, got a fresh start and everything is working fine now.
I have, also, been running XP Restore, but I have never been able to get it to fix problems like GoBack can. I am about ready to disable XP Restore and just use GoBack.
The only problem is: It is my experience that now that Symantec has taken over GB, there is NO reliable support for GB. My experience with Symantec's GB support has been awful. When Roxio had GB, support was outstanding due to their user formums.

I agree with spotteddog. Wouldn't be without GoBack. It can be a real Iife saver at times where system restore has failed. The difference with GoBack is that it restores you to a previuos time. Any downloads, files, etc. since then are not restored. If you've created files or downloaded something and need to do a GoBack, save the files to a floppy or CD and then run GoBack. Since Symantec has taken it over i hope they don't ruin it.

GoBack Deluxe allows you to recover files lost in a revert. It allows you to create virtual drives of the past to copy files back over to your hard-drive.

I liked GoBack standard, but GoBack Deluxe does a lot more. (And it costs more) and you would probably have to buy GoBack Deluxe separately.

I also back up files on CD's. If the Hard-drive fails, GoBack is useless. And for a little over-kill, I also use Norton Ghost. Goback has to be disabled or uninstalled before creating a disk image or to restore computer from the disk image.

My 2 cents.

On backing up files on CD's, how do you do that? Do you use CD-R's or CD-RW's? I've tried both with some wierd results. For one thing CD-RW's seem to fill the disk at sometimes less than 500 MB, even though these advertise to be 700 MB disks. And I use Roxio Project Selector for CD-R backups but never have quite understood how this works.

Also do you know about how much I can expect to pay for GOBACK3 Deluxe (upgrade) and for GHOST?

CDs are a lot cheaper than CD/RW's. RW's can be used over and over, but I found after so many times of writing over them, they became corrupted and unreadable. I usually got less than 650mb out of a CD/RW.

I use "make a data" CD when copying files to CDs.
At the top, there should be a drop-down list of directories. You copy the files from the directory you have your files.

What I do is copy all the files that are not burned to CD yet to a folder, called "Not copied to CD"

Then when I'm ready to burn to CD, I locate that folder in my project.

You can also use Direct CD, or Drag to disk to send all the files to the CD.

Roxio.com has message boards if you need help, you just have to register.

System restore just restores programs and settings. GoBack restores EVERYTHING back at a specific time.

I also use System restore, but set the restore space to about 800 mb.

That saves space, and in the event Goback is unable to revert due to excessive disk activity (moving large amounts of files, defragging the hard-drive) system restore can be a saver too, but your files will be lost that you saved after the revert time your choose to revert to.

System restore saved me a few times. Once, my second HD got corrupted when I attempted to partition it with Partition Magic that Windows could not see the 2nd hard-drive. Goback was disabled so I could partition. Finally, I used System restore, and Windows saw my second hard-drive again.

So, if you can, use both. And back up all of your important files (those not already on install CDs) on CDs or DVDs. (If you have a CD or a DVD burner, if not, you should consider getting one)

I use 2 hard drives. I also got rid of XP System restore, tried it several times, and not once has it ever worked. It always says, restore failed, nothing has been changed. So I went to Go Back 3. It restored and got rid on my mistakes several times. I use CasperXP to clone my C drive to the second drive. I use to use Nortons Ghost but found it a DOS base system that didn't seem to work well with windowsXP But CaserXP works in windows, I also found the the ratio of missed files (Or files that didn't get copied" Lower in CasperXP. I shut everthing down that is not needed to run before I clone. And CasperXP works perfect.
