System 32 error after installing SP2

Question

After the SP2 was installed on my XP program, my children's games won't install. I get error  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications.  How can I fix this? I am not very computer literate but definitely not ignorant. Please help.

I've been suspecting SP2 was the culprit - there have been a large number of posts about this problem since SP2 was released!
