system recovery without an OS

Vista

computer died, I assume it is a software issue because i can access the hard drive if I slave it to another computer. Vista is AWOL.

I tried to do a Dell factory image restore, but it appears you need an OS to restore the OS. When I hit "F8", i get an "OS not found error". I mean, like duh!, If i didnt have a problem with Vista, I would not be doing a restore.

I assumed, because it has a recovery partition, I could use it to do a recovery.

Does anyone know how to do a recovery, or a reformat and reinstall, without an OS?

I am repairing this computer for a friend, she says she did not get any recovery disks with the computer, so reinstalling vista from a disk is not an option.

and, since the laptop is about 10 years old, it would not be worth it to buy a new copy of Vista.

Or should I just give it back to her and tell her it is now a paper weight or a door stop?

Windows Vista is an older operating system currently may or may not be available with Dell.

You may download an ISO image of Vista from the link http://bit.ly/19RnXjS and create a bootable USB to install the operating system.

Refer to the link http://dell.to/16NSL2j for steps on creating a bootable USB media for an ISO image.

As stated, you can download a 'retail' copy of Vista to install with (then activate over the phone with the Product Key with Microsoft).  If you are in the US, you can request an installation disc here: https://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form For other locations, you will need to contact Dell Support directly. The system can't be 10 years old if it shipped with Vista, since Vista is not even 7 years old.  So, if it was updated to Vista, then you would need to first install XP, then upgrade again to Vista.  An actual Dell installation CD for XP would then be required (retail won't work).  If the system shipped with Vista, then it is between 4-7 years old, and depending on the specs, it may or may not be worth the price of purchasing a new OS (if both the media and key are lost and/or cannot be obtained - even then, Windows 7 would be preferable to Vista).

This will guide you through downloading Windows Vista setup files and creating a bootable USB aswell as backing up/obtaining the Dell OEM system locked preinstallation activation mechanism (as present on the Dell Windows Vista Reinstallation DVD).

Then it will guide you through a clean installation of Windows Vista, the service packs, product activation and Windows Update.

You may also carry out the optional secure wipe with DBAN.

Edit misread, its an Inspiron 1525 so likely you should install the 32 bit version of Windows Vista although there have been a few people who have successfully installed Windows 7 64 bit on this model.
