System Restore GONE, Search Companion GONE
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP/SP2. I recently tried to uninstall Symantec by following directions from askdavetaylor.com. I had to go into the registry and remove from there and I think I removed something BAD. Now my Java is not functioning correctly (although the test at Java.com says it is) I can open many pages and my email but cannot work most buttons. I tried to go to System Restore and all I get is a blank page and the same thing with my Search...NOTHING. I want to wipe the PC clean and reinstall Windows XP but I would love to save if anything my pics but now my burner isn't working and I cannot backup the system to disk either. HELPPPPPPPP!
Anything is appreciated even if yelling at me!! LOL

click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click OK
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.
If that doesn't fix it, you'd probably be better off running a Repair/Reinstall of XP rather than a Reformat/Reinstall so you won't lose your files.
Boot from XP CD and press Enter (not R) at first screen
Accept the User License
Select your installation of XP on next screen (should only be one)
Press R at next screen for Repair/Reinstall
When the Repair is done, get firewall and antiviral software running. Then do directly to MS update site because you'll need to reinstall every single XP update and hotfix again.
And then finally, back up all those pix and other critical files on CDs, now! ;)
