Did you try system restore in safe mode?

Do you have Norton products installed? 

If you have Norton Antivirus or Internet Securoty 2006 or later you'd need to turn off the protection temporarily to get System Restore to work.  Did you get the message "restoration Incomplete.  Your computer cannot be restored..."?  If so go into NAV or Norton Internet Security --->> Options--->> Misc.  Uncheck Turn On Protection... and exit.  Use System Restore and go back in and put the checkmark back again.
