System Restore
I have an XPS 400 .. doesnt come with XP software on CD .. pre loaded only
when I goto system restore (hoping to go back to a specific starting point) the error comes ..
"system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again"
once I reboot .. same issue ...
I also have manually installed the SR.INF file from the Windows folder in C:\
still no effects
I also tried to manually restore from Comman Prompt by starting in Safe mode
still no effects

But getting a Windows XP disk will fix my System Restore issue ? will Iose my saved data ?
I just want my System Restore to work properly ..

To address the lack of a CD issue, see this post.
To correct the System Restore problem turn off System Restore (Start|Control Panel|System|System Restore tab) and reboot. Go back and enable System Restore again then try to create a manual restore point to see if it will work.

The options of a clean installation or a repair reinstallation should be reserved for problems that cannot be easily resolved otherwise. Loss of data stored on the system partition and disabling the Dell PC Restore feature are expected consequences of a clean installation. Obtain the CDs in preparation for that contingency, or obtain the CDs later if/when the need arises.Hopefully your current problem can be resolved by the instructions provided by Denny in the post above. Existing Restore points will be lost, but the feature may be fixed or repaired and available for future use. Windows Restore is not entirely reliable, and there is no simple repair that will allow you to preserve your current restore points.Presumably you have a problem that you wished to resolve by performing a Windows Restore, but that is not an option when Windows Restore is not working properly.
