System.ini failure

When booting Windows 98, the start up sequence begins, then a DOS screen appears with the message "failed to read system.ini" (or something very close to that), then shuts itself down.  What should I do?  Any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks

pmsoule,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

Can you tell us exactly what happens to the system when you turn it on.  Also, what changes were made including software/hardware.

I'll have to get back to you on this to be completely specific.  This occurred on my home PC last night, so I'll have to try to crank it back up later, paying stricter attention.  In general, yes, I did delete some files last night.  Temp Internet and cookies was all I tought I deleted though.  Too much auto downloading while on line with my bargain priced ISP, so I try to clean it all out.  During boot, it goes though a couple screens, the DELL screen - then the message appears - then auto shut down.  The OS is Windows 98.

Boot the systen in the dos mode, and try the following command.
c:\>scanreg /restore

If problem can't solved(in dos mode) copy the system.ini files from other computer to the your computer in the c:\windows\system location.
