The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.

Could any one PLEASE help? I have a Dell 8300 with the following problem. It sees my two DVD recorders, only as DVD ROMS. First thing I notice was, no longer had option to wirte these files to cd when highlighting a file. And the two drives do not appear in the (send to) menu when right clicking a file. When clicking MY COMPUTER, then right clicking either of the DVD recorder drives then selecting properties, the record tab is missing.
I can however still burn with ether drive using the soft wear that came with them. Sonic and or Nero. One more thing, my Maxtor ext drive still appears in the (send to) menu, if that’s important.

Have had the following Errors

Controller error sounds like a motherboard issue (going bad).  Have you tried falshing the BIOS?

No have only tried uninstalling sonic then reinstalling it.Thought it was a recorder problem. Is flashing the BIOS best place to start? Then what?

The only thing that comes to mind immediately is either a BIOS flash or updated drivers for the external unit.  I've never heard of two burnewrs on one machine, not normal machines anyways.

A System Restore didn't work?

No, system restore did not help. I only had a check point back to 2/10/2006.
Lost restore points when I turned off system restore to do a defrag, told this
would work better, can't say it did. I will try flashing the BIOS and get the driver update, and will let you know. THANKS FOR HELPING ME.

The reason for the 2nd burner was I wanted a copy of Nero, found this burner on sale
with Nero, faster speed, double layer, also burns to dvd-r every thing worked great
for about a year

If you Google the main part of your error message, you will get some hits, but no real solution yet.

Yes, I looked on google, that's actsualy what lead me to dell's forum. Its hard to
tell if its a hardware, or software problem. Both of my dvd recorders still work with
sonic or Nero directly, just not from the file and send to menu in windows.
I talked to an asoliate from work today that had the same error on his dell, however
his stoped working completely, he had no solution either.
I tried to get BIOS and driver updates from dell last night, could not get pass the second page where you chose the operating system will try again tonight.

again: Thanks for helping

OK I have done a BIOS flash, updated chipset, the flashed the optical drives that
came with the Dell. However not the ext sony drive. Instructions say to uninstall any packet writing softwear such as DLA and to disable DMA settings in windows could not find this setting. Can you tell me where it is?
