To RoHe regarding loading XP by Kofschip
Ron, after a number of personal delays, I finally loaded the XP Pro OS. I originally tried to reload it through SP3, but the system hung up in the tail end of the boot process with a black blank screen. Maybe this was due to that I did not have yet the drivers installed at that point. I tried this twice and abandoned it. Presently I have installed XP SP2 with all the updates except for SP3. I have three items left to address:
1. Due to my original ignorance of everything I installed XP on the D drive. I removed XP from the D drive, but during startup the boot process the OS selection screen comes up, allowing me to select between C and D drive XP systems. The default is the C drive, which is OK. Is there a way to get rid of this bringing up the "OS" on the D drive?
2. The "System32" screen appears in Windows as the last item in the whole startup process. It did this also before we started the whole process. Is there any way of getting rid of the poppin up of the screen?
3. In the Device Manager, PCI device sits there with a big yellow question mark. I have tried to find a driver for this, but somehow I have not been successful with the drivers that I tried. Maybe it is possible for you to point me in the right direction.

Yes there is a way to skip that annoying OS selection screen.
1. Press the start button.
2. Press run.
3. Into the dialog box that appears type msconfig.
4. Go to the 'boot' tab.
5. Now you can either delete or appropriate line from the boot.ini file (should be the second line down) or what I prefer to do is set the timeout value to 3 seconds, so that screen will only flash up for 3 seconds before automatically selecting the default.
Do you mean that the System32 folder appears once the machine has started up? If that is the case please read this Microsoft article here on how to resolve the issue.
Have you tried looking on the Dell CD's that came with your machine?

Nebon, Thanks for responding. I am going to follow your advice on the first two items. Yes, for the PCI driver and all other drivers, I did use the Dell "Recourse" CD, as well as all the other Dell CDs that came with my XPS Gen 2. Then afterwards I updated the pertinent drivers with my service tag. However, either I am missing something or I did something wrong, I can't find anything on the PCI driver.

Rather than messing around with manual editing of the boot file, just click the "Check All Boot Paths" button on the Boot.ini screen in msconfig. It'll test the boot paths and give you the option to delete the non-functional one (D: ). - a safer approach. ;)

This is apparently going in the right direction, I deleted the non-functional D: drive boot and with the MS article I found what was wrong at startup and corrected the "KEY" command. Now the "annoying" screens are gone. Thank you very much.
The only thing that still bothers me a bit is that PCI stuff. I do have the 56K PCI Data Fax Modem (left over from the early days) and a matching driver, then I have the Intel Pro 1000 Intergrated PCI NIC Card and a matching driver. But on the PCI with the question mark in the device manager it states: Manufacturer unknown, PCI bus 1, device 0, function 1. And digging a bit deeper I get: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_AA08&SUBSYS_AA081545&REV_00\4&30651773&0&0108. And I do not know what this means, whether it is critical or what. I have tried all the CDs that came with this machine, but none of them had the driver. I also tried all the drivers with my Service Tag, which did not help either. Can you help me with this too?

Hi Jerry,
Firstly check if you are missing any obvious devices on the device manager like a Graphics Card? You can also try this program called Halfdone. I have no expirence with it myself, but I hope you can compare the list it produces against that of the device manager.
If you are still having trouble please read this MS article on How to troubleshoot unkown devices.

PCI\VEN_1002 listed in that error message is ATI, so it sounds like you probably need to uninstall and reinstall the correct ATI video card driver.
If the sound is gone, uninstall and reinstall the right audio driver too

Nebon, thanks, I will follow your guidelines and try it. I am also have to try reloading my sound drivers, because the sound is suddenly gone too. It is amazing what these machines can do to a person.:smileysad:

Sorry Ron, if we lived in a perfect world, I would not be in this Forum...:smileyvery-happy:
But, you are helping me and you are teaching me a lot, including brand new words. I just got my sound back on my own!!!!!!!! And from what you are telling me, it looks like I have to uninstall the VisionTek ATI driver (I have a VisionTek ATI card) and then reinstall it again, just like I did for the sound.:smileywink: I'll do that tomorrow, it is getting to be bedtime for me.

Ron, I really had rinse my mouth out AFTER 4 rather intense one-hour sessions with the technical staff of my friendly DSL ISP. I do believe that I have now an Internet connection, but I am not quite sure how long I can stay on line. Per your suggestion a couple of days ago, I did reload the ATI drivers. I first tried the latest AMD ATI driver for the VisionTek HD2600 Pro AGP, that one did not want to load and kicked me out of the installation process. Then I tried the latest VisionTek driver and that one did load, but the PCI is still under the dreaded yellow question mark. If you have a solution for it please let me know. I also found a couple of other minor hiccups, but they can wait till a later date.

So, at this point I am going to see what I can find out at the VisionTek Forum on this subject. I want to thank you especially Ron and the others for all their help. You have solved most of my problems and I got Combat Flight Sims 2 and 3 working again.:smileyhappy::smileyhappy:

Maybe we should nominate you to be Poet Laureat of the Dell Community Forums?
If you're brave, right-click the ?PCI device and uninstall it. Then reboot and see if XP asks you to point it at the driver for some piece of hardware. If you're lucky it might just find it on its own or possibly tell you want hardware driver it wants. Then again, knowing microsoft... ;)

You might want to start a new thread on these forums if you continue to have problems (I HOPE NOT!). A new thread will appear at the top of the forum's first page so more people will see it and post fixes. I don't got all the answers, for sure!

Ron, my modem is dying, I just got it to working till it overheats. I would follow your suggestion, but for some obscure reason the XP Restore command is not working. But then I just may try it, AFTER the ATI forum comes up with suggestions that may or may not make sense. I will keep you posted, unless you want me to "sign off" from this forum on this subject. My friendly ISP is sending me a new modem, so it may be again several days before I get back online.
