You can only transfer mostly user data, not programs as most programs will have to be installed (if they are even compatible with the new PC).

Windows has a built in "easy transfer" program that along with a special transfer cable that will allow you to transfer data over.  However, the easiest way would be to just burn CD's of the user data on the old PC and then copy the user data on to the new PC. You could also do it with some other USB connected hard drive or even the "memory key's" depending on how much data you have.  Another option is to remove the hard drive from the old PC and it's a SATA interface type drive you could temporarliy install it in the new PC so you could copy the data you want or even install the old hard drive in an external USB enclosure and transfer that way.

Thanks for the info.,but being a not too savy PC user I am not sure of being capable to do it on my own.The "easy transfer" sounds the best. What cable would I need and how to proceed?Connect the two PCs with the cable through USB ports? Both PCs would have to be powered-up,leave the old one on the monitor?

Sorry for the lot of stupid questions but I am really nervous abut it.My present PC is about eight years old and has a tremendous amount of stuff like photos the IE has dozens if not hundreds of Favorites could all that be transferred over with the "easy transfer"?

Thanks again

See THIS on the Vista easy transfer.  But to be truthful, my experiences with easy transfer have not been "easy".

A drive wire would allow you to mount your old drive like a gigantic flash drive.
