Trendware optional hardware update, necessary?
Hi, Dimension 3000, xp pro, ie8. My ethernet connector is a realtec, (bought from Dell when installed one quit.) Microsoft update has an optional hardware update for trendnet, teg-pcitxr, pci adapter. As far as I know I do not have any trendware products. The only pci things I have in device manager are a pci bus and a pci bridge. Do I need this update? What is it updating if I have no trendware products?

Apparently the Ethernet NIC that you installed is reporting to Windows that it is a trendnet, teg-pcitxr, pci adapter and the reason the Windows updates wants to install updates.
Download and run the free SIW (System Info for Windows) program. It will profile your PC and let you see what the NIC card actually is.

Hi, Fireberd, thank you for your response. SIW says my nic is a realtek, manufactured by sunrich. ??

I found one post doing a google search for sunrich that referred to Trendware. So, ultimately the Windows update sounds like it is correct for the card.
There is an option in the Device Manager to fall back to the previous driver so it should be safe to install the Trendware and if it doesn't work or work correctly you can fall back.
To do a driver fall back, open the Device Manager (Hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break key and when the panel comes up there will be a link to the Device Manager). In the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for your Ethernet card and then Left click on Properties. Click the Driver tab and one option will be a roll back.

Fireberd, Sorry, but I had to go back to realtek ethernet controller. I had a few problems with connecting with some web pages after installing the trendware adapter from microsoft updates and I just wrote it off as a busy internet night. Well just a half hour ago I lost all connection to the internet. I looked at the back of my computer and the green light next to the ethernet card was off. So I disabled the trendware in dev mgr and reinstalled the realtek, and got back on the internet. My folder for realtek was still listed in my files but the folder was empty. Evidently, the update turned it off and emptied the folder. Thanks for your assistance anyway. I just was glad I was able to return to a good state. Bye, Liz.
