Trying to run The Sims 2

Dear Sirs,

I have loaded The Sims 2 game onto my PC computer, but every time the game does an automatic “Preparing Captive Simulators” my screen gets all blocky and this message pops up:

Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device failure.  Please save your work and reboot to restore full functioning.  The graphic adapter in this system experienced an interior error.  Please contact graphic adapter manufacturer for technical support.  The application will now terminate.  Could someone please help me?  Thank you.

My computer is a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600, System Type X86-based PC, Dimension 4600i

You don't mention whether you are using the on board graphics chip or if you have a separate AGP graphics card...it could be that your pc doesn't meet the graphics hardware requirements for the game...did you check out the requirements on the side of the game box?
