Turning WinXP Default burning option off

Right click on your CD/DVD drive and choose properties. Now go to the autoplay tab and select blank CD. You cab either select take no action or if you are lucky, you will see Nero among the options for auto play and you can select that to make it so that every time you insert a blank CD/DVD, Nero will start. If you don't see Nero among the options then you are going to have to get Tweak UI from Microsoft and insert Nero among the auto play options yourself. Tweak UI is a must have for any XP user. You can get it at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Your issue is not the "default burning" option, but rather the Windows "Autoplay" for the drive(s).  If you turn Autoplay off or only have it set for a specific program, such as Nero then when you insert, for example, an audio CD to play music it will either not autoplay or will bring up some Nero application that you don't want. 

I leave my Autoplay alone, and just close the blank window when it comes up, with Nero 6.  I also have Roxio V7.5 installed on my PC and Roxio will block the Autoplay and a blank screen won't come up like Nero.

I didn't realize it was the AutoPlay feature. Thank for letting me know. I only have Nero 6.6 on my system. Whenever I put either a DVD or a CD in the drive, I'll get a list from Windows of what action I want to take. Right now I just close the box out and go on with what I want to do. But that box does get annoying at times. Maybe I'll set it to "Blank Screen." Nero isn't listed as an option.

If you have Tweak UI then you can make Nero automatically start when you inset a blank CD/DVD.  In Tweak UI go to My Computer, Auto Play and then finally Handlers. Just press Create and then the Change Program tab and find NeroStartSmart.exe (It should be at C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero StartSmart\NeroStartSmart.exe .) Finally, under Supported Media, check Blank CDR and then press okay. That should do it. If that doesn't work you might need to right click on your CD drive and select properties, go to Autoplay, select Blank CD from the drop down list and select Nero Start Smart and then press Apply.  Phew ;)

The thing about Auto Play is that it can cause all sorts of funky problems when installing games and programs from CD/DVD. I would recommend that you just select the Take No Action option in Auto play for Blank CDs and for all other media and files on CD/DVD as well. That way you can have more control over your computer and not have your computer controlling you ;).

I forget that AutoPlay can also cause problems when installing programs. It's probably why I've had difficulty before when installing a program.

I set the AutoPlay feature to "Take No Action." Now it won't interfere with anything. I did find Nero listed. I don't know how I missed seeing it the first time. But the settings are on "Blank Cd."

Thanks again for the help. There are so many settings in WinXP that it gets confusing.
