Unable to change folder option

I seem to be stuck with folders that show the sidebar with "favorite links" and "folders"; I don't want the side bar. I went to Tools/Folder Options and selected "Use Windows Classic Folders". But, I still have the same window format. How can I get rid of the useless (to me) and space-consuming sidebar in all folders?

I'm having the same sort of problem with the "Open each folder in its own window" option, which seems equally ineffective.

Has anyone else experienced these problems? Does anyone have a solution?

I'm not sure about the "Open each folder in its own window", but to get rid of the "sidebar", click on Organize>Layout>Navigation Pane.

Thank you! I find the Vista is not particularly respectful of screen space.
And, now, the "Open each folder in its own window" is working! Curious.
